Societal Benefit

Climate and ecosystem change impacts every sector of society, including human health, food production, energy use, water resources, transportation and commerce. The successful response to the challenges of climate and ecosystem change requires the appropriate observation systems and the scientific skills to model potential impact and the consequences of change in ecosystems, societies and economies. Existing remote sensing configurations are often inadequate in terms of imaging performance and/or measurement resolution and accuracy for drawing reliable conclusions on large scale processes and their dynamics. Tandem-L facilitates the systematic observation of a multitude of dynamic processes on the Earth’s surface. By the use of modern radar technologies, the stringent scientific requirements for observation interval, resolution and data quality can be optimally fulfilled. Tandem-L will decisively contribute to a better understanding of following processes.

Carbon Cycle

Tandem-L will measure biomass and its seasonal and yearly variation with unprecedented accuracy on a global scale. This will be a key contribution to drastically reducing the uncertainties in the terrestrial components of the carbon cycle. [more]

Tandem-L will record the critical components of the water cycle, such as soil moisture, and the dynamics of flow and melting processes in the cryosphere on a global scale with high temporal and spatial resolution. [more]

Ecosystem Dynamics
Tandem-L will map the complexity and diversity of vertical forest structures, as well as their variation on a global scale with high temporal, spatial and vertical resolution. This provides a significant contribution for monitoring systems that support the implementation and verification of environmental policies. [more]

Tandem-L will record systematically deformations of the Earth's surface with millimeter accuracy for earthquake research and risk analysis. [more]
